Upside of U.S. downturn is about inflation

Don't expect Ben Bernanke to come right out and say it.

But the U.S. Federal Reserve Board chief just may be secretly wishing for the one thing he insists he's working tirelessly to avert – a recession.

The reason, of course, is the surprising resurgence of inflation.

While we've all been watching the U.S. housing slump and the credit crunch play out, prices for just about everything have been quietly spiking. Last week, oil and wheat pushed to new highs that seem almost surreal. Oil at more than $103 (U.S.) a barrel. Wheat approaching $15 a bushel.

With an integration of FileMaker Pro's Web Viewer layout object and Adobe Flash(R) technology, iSolutions seating application managed seating arrangements for the Award Show, Governors' Ball and Sci-Tech Awards this season.

Using iSolutions' FileMaker-based seating application for the Governors Ball, AMPAS staff was able to view the entire floor layout along with table and guest details on their computer screens. The software was used for decision making and placement of guests like Daniel-Day Lewis, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Michael Moore at their respective tables and made seating for the more than 2,000+ invitees much more efficient.

"This year, due to the uncertainty caused by the writer's strike, we were making constant changes up to the very last minute to accommodate seating needs.

Halfway through the animated Tom Hanks film, they left the theater."It wasn't an upbeat Christmas movie, and I could tell he was bored," the Twin Falls woman said.Walker isn't alone in her struggle to find films she considers appropriate for children. Across Magic Valley, parents eye the movie listings and have to make a choice: Do they rely on word of mouth, critics' reviews or detailed ratings before giving Junior the OK?That decision is harder when theaters are full of sex and violence. Hollywood is turning out lots of PG-13 and R-rated movies, and fewer rated G or PG."I've been wanting to take (my son) to a movie for the last month or so but there isn't anything out there I would take him to see," Walker said. The selection isn't a problem for teens or adults, she added. "For the size of the town that we are, there's enough of a variance in the type of movies that they show."Theaters in south-central Idaho are currently playing five PG-rated movies and one G-rated film ("Mr.

Craddick's Democratic Supporters, GOP Opponents Fighting For Jobs

Lawmakers who opposed Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick during last year's rebellion will see if they face any consequences Tuesday.

That's as voters decide which will get a chance to keep their jobs.

A handful of state legislators are under attack for siding with the Midland Republican during a bitter coup attempt last year. Several disenchanted Republicans complained that Craddick is too authoritarian and joined with Democrats to try to oust Craddick from his leadership post at the end of last year's legislative session.

Democratic Representatives Kino Flores, Aaron Pena, Dawnna Dukes and Kevin Bailey are among the "Craddick Ds" who angered their party by siding with Craddick in the rebellion. Their primary opponents have used their support of Craddick as campaign fodder.

Burpee admits abduction/assault, police report

Todd David Burpee told Palo Alto police detectives that he beat, threatened to kill and sexually assaulted a young woman last week because he was angry after a fight with his fiancee.

"It could have been anyone. It could have been a guy. I was just mad," he told Palo Alto police detectives Sal Madrigal and April Wagner after his arrest Thursday night in San Jose, according to a thick police report filed Tuesday morning with the Santa Clara County Superior Court in Palo Alto.

Police also say that Burpee wrote a letter of apology for the attack when they were interviewing him.

Burpee's chilling account of the attack on the 17-year-old Gunn High School student included details of how he stood by the door of the complex shortly after 3 p.m. Oct.
