The One America Committee says it is "dedicated to helping elect Democratic candidates across the country." The most important Democrat seems to be Senator John Edwards. Remember him? Eight months after the 2004 Presidential election, Senator Edwards launched a video blog. While it is hard to imagine the Senator fiddling around with his computer late at night editing video (he has some professional help on this), it does maintain a grassroots, homemade feeling. Citizens (right now mostly video bloggers) can video tape a question and send it in. Then Sen. Edwards answers the question, also on video. The end result is a time-delayed conversation, or a really long town hall meeting. It is a great application of the vlog concept. And a good indicator that the Internet will continue to be a key tool in politics.

Lions may choke on ikan bilis

THEY are young idealists raring to do the MCA proud.

But considering that they are being sent to contest against opposition "lions", the first question being asked by political pundits is: are they sacrificial lambs being sent to the altar of political slaughter?

The more unkind even ask: is the party giving up the fight even before the war has started?

Their president, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, has the answer: the new faces are part of the party's rejuvenation process which will make the party more dynamic.

And the young MCA men and women are raring to go into battle with guns firing.
There are 12 fresh faces in the MCA candidates list released on Thursday but what raised eyebrows was the seats some of these newcomers will be contesting in.

Aug. 2, 1873: San Francisco's First Cable Car Conquers Nob Hill

1873: Andrew Hallidie tests the first cable car in San Francisco.

Hallidie is said to have conceived his idea in 1869 while watching a team of horses being whipped as they struggled to pull a car up wet cobblestones on Nob Hill. They slipped and were dragged to their deaths.

It so happened that Hallidie's father held the British patent for wire-rope cable and when the son came to the Gold Rush fields he put it to use hauling ore-laden cars from mines. So it wasn't too much of a stretch for him to envision horseless cable cars carrying passengers up the steep slopes of San Francisco's hills.

He formed the Clay Street Hill Railroad and was awarded a contract to build the city's first cable-car line up Nob Hill. Fourteen months later, on Aug. 2, the first cable car made its way up Clay Street.

Liz Chun

Unlike some of my peers, I didn't truly plan to be where I am right now. Sure once I chose to major in Broadcast Journalism at Colorado State University, my path was clear. But there have been many twists and turns along the way that have now made this my dream job. After graduation from CSU, I was open to work just about anywhere. But then my grandmother got sick so I was left with only one option. I came home to Hawaii to take care of my "popo." But after six months of caring for her, I felt out of touch with the world, especially the newsroom. That's when my friend suggested I apply to be an associate producer at KGMB. Sure enough, I took the entry position at $6.50 an hour and never looked back. Fortunately for me, being in the news business felt as natural as riding a bike. It didn't take long for me to earn a full time position with benefits (possibly one of my dad's proudest moments).

Fetish Anonymous

The non-sex YouTube videos and paysite 911bio-med.com, dedicated to the nail-biting moments we see on shows like "ER" where medical technicians (actors) use a defibrillator machine as the last resort to save a life. Usually a woman's (though not always). Not just giantesses (macrophilia), but giantesses' feet. House of Slime (houseofslime.com). You'll note that this year's finds are, contrary to popular stereotypes, not all Japanese. And just last month, my pals at YesButNoButYes were even compelled to list their top 10 funniest fetish site finds, which thankfully include girls in spacesuits and girls eating sandwiches. Which makes me wonder, am I losing out on a financial opportunity every time I eat at the Blue Front Cafe? Would an outsider then understand that to me, it's not really about a sandwich but more about how the sandwich feels?

The beautiful, effusive dominatrix continued where my thoughts left off.

Photographs and Memories

The family stories on these pages emerged from readers' letters and interviews with writer Katie Thomas. Though the accounts were edited for clarity and to fit the format of "Our Family Album," our goal throughout was to present them in the voices of the Long Islanders you will meet in this section. The families, old pictures and documents in "Our Family Album" were photographed by Tom Ferrara, with additional photography by Bill Davis, John H. Cornell Jr. and Viorel Florescu.

Suicide Bombing Kills Woman in Israel

An Israeli police explosives robot removes clothing from the body of a suicide bomber at the scene of an attack in the town of Dimona, southern Israel, Monday, Feb. 4, 2008. A suicide bomber on Monday blew himself up in the southern town that houses Israel's secretive nuclear reactor, killing at least one Israeli and wounding six, one critically, Israeli authorities said. Police said they killed a second attacker before he had a chance to detonate his explosives belt. (Yehuda Lahiany - AP) .
