Fourth player faces charges

Taylor, a sophomore from Clinton, Md., was temporarily suspended from the football team in early February until "[his] academic situation improves and any off-the-field issues are behind [him]," according to a statement released by the athletic department last month. Former wide receiver Chris Bell was suspended from the team at the same time and has also been mentioned in court documents as a participant; however, he is not facing criminal charges.

Baker, Bowman and Timmons were "excused" from the football team in late January.

Baker and Bowman were originally arraigned in mid-November on the same charges Taylor now faces. Although Centre County District Judge Carmine Prestia dropped the aggravated assault charges for both men in a Dec. 5 preliminary hearing, Centre County Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane refiled the charges later that month, and the charges were sent to trial in January under a different judge.

What happens to WiMax with Sprint on the ropes?

Posted in:

General Wired & Wireless Telecommunications Broadband

Sprint Nextel had a net loss of $29.5 billion, suspended its dividend and drew down its credit line for "financial flexibility." Meanwhile, Sprint has jumped into the wireless price war fray with its own $99.99 a month all-you-can-eat wireless plan. Sprint's woes wouldn't be a big deal if the company wasn't a key cog in the effort to bring WiMax to market.

Simply put, one of WiMax's biggest champions is limping along so badly (Techmeme) that you have to wonder if the company can help push services mainstream. Let's face it: Motorola, Intel and Samsung can push WiMax all they want and even throw billions behind the effort, but you need a carrier to hook people up.

Cactus Pryor battles Alzheimer's

Writing a piece used to take me five minutes. It takes me a day now," he says.

"Sure, he gets frustrated," says son Don Pryor, who also works at KLBJ and shares commentary duty with his father. "I look at it with the perspective that it takes me two or three days to write one."

"Cactus at one-quarter speed is what the rest of us are at full speed," Davis Pryor says.

Writing and relying on his recollection of Austin's rich history is good for Pryor. "Having difficulty remembering a password is quite typical, but his writing skills will remain intact because whenever he writes, it will be about things familiar to him like his distant past," says David Lipschitz, a leading geriatrician, chairman of the Ronald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics and director of the Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas.

Jumper Reaches $38.3 Million in 5 Days

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to check back on Tuesday for final figures based on actual box office. The Bourne Identity and Mr. & Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman struck again, as his new sci-fi action-thriller Jumper opened to impressive numbers this holiday weekend. Over the four-day Presidents' Day weekend, Jumper earned an estimated $31.7 million from 3,428 theaters for an average of $9,247 per location. That makes it the fifth-biggest opening for the weekend ever, trailing just Ghost Rider ($52 million), 50 First Dates ($45.2 million), Daredevil ($45 million) and Constantine ($33.6 million). 20th Century Fox took advantage of Valentine's Day Thursday, opening the pic a day early and allowing the movie to reach $38.3 million in its first five days domestically.

So long Time Warner Cable, hello DIRECTV

Now sure, I've read George Ou's recent posts about the poor image quality of their "HD-lite" service, but I still wanted to see what they were offering. [Until now, I had avoided satellite because I liked the idea of video-on-demand, and because I couldn't imagine life without NY1, a local all-news station that's exclusively on Time Warner Cable only available through Time Warner Cable and Cablevision. In reality, we hardly ever use VOD, and as for NY1 — well, life always has trade-offs, and I can always stream the audio from their website if I get really desperate.] The bottom line: For our first 12 months, we could pay $49.99 a month for virtually every station we receive today (it would go up to $69.99 a month after the first 12 months). On top of that, we would need to buy a $99 HD-DVR ($199, plus a $100 rebate), which at least on the surface, appears to blow away our current Scientific Atlanta box from Time Warner.
