Eh, what's up, maestro?

The popular show syncs a live symphony performance to the big-screen antics of Bugs, Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote, the Road Runner and other vintage characters from the Warner Bros. vaults. It's the brainchild of conductor George Daugherty, an Emmy Award winner who works regularly with some of the most prominent orchestras around the globe. But part of his musical life belongs to Bugs -- he's now in his 18th year of leading symphonies through this melodic joy ride that so far has delighted nearly 2 million people.Daugherty, who will conduct the Fresno ensemble, says it's not difficult to figure out why so many people have leaped at the Bugs experience."It's that mix of highbrow and lowbrow, for lack of a better description, that makes this concert so engaging," Daugherty says in a telephone interview from his San Francisco home.

Emory Movie Wins Citywide Award

The sophomore filmmakers who won Best Picture at Emory's Campus MovieFest captured the Best Soundtrack award for the second year in a row at the college film festival's citywide competition on Saturday.

Director Chris Knific and Assistant Directors Stephen Beehler and Arjun Joshi won a copy of Apple sound-editing software valued at $2,000 for the original soundtrack of their picture “Not Another Bollywood Movie."

“I probably put in about 10 hours into the soundtrack," Knific said.

Knific recorded the music — drums, guitar, bass and keyboards — in his dorm room, and Amit Bery sang the songs' lyrics, which were penned in Hindi by Joshi.

The film, a story about an Indian couple who flees to America to get married against their parents' wishes, featured 16 other sophomores, who acted or danced in the film's Bollywood-inspired musical numbers.

A look at first DVDs back in 1996

Another unique feature of the DVD is different information can be obtained on different levels of the disc. That means longer movies can fit on one disc. The signal transfer from one layer to the next is seamless.

Multi-levels of reading information means the same movie may contain an R-rated version of a film for adults, with a PG version for kids. The same disc may contain a letterboxed version for film aficionados, and pan-and-scan for those who want their screens filled to the top, even if it cuts off the sides.

While all of that sounds dazzling, imagine recordable discs. A DVD-rom writeable system would let you store four to eight times what your bigger computer hard drives today contain. Take the disc out and put it in a safe place and put in another!

Tech people are working on a way to encode movies so they can't be copied.

I did some of the links outside but the road in front of the hotel was rather busy and there was a very noisy bar a few doors away. In the end, I had to do resort to sitting with my microphone under the duvet to get rid of the echo! Obviously it was rather dark under there, so I had to attach a torch to my head in order to read my script. And with the temperature and humidity already uncomfortably high, I can tell you that it was far from pleasant! In fact, I could only manage one link at a time before coming up for air and water! What a glamorous life us reporters lead! I mentioned the other day that you can't even get away from the World Cup when you're travelling between cities on German trains. Well, it's the same on Berlin's underground system. The windows in some carriages have come out in a nasty football type rash.
