-The worst month for sports is what were going through right now. The NBA is hitting the mid-season and there is yet to be any real excitement. You have the NFL that just got over a month ago, and yes, we're all sad because that marks the end of football for another 6-7 months. College Football recruiting is always fun, but we all know that in a sense it is just a waiting game that is boring. We have College Basketball hitting conference schedules real hard which is truely fun to watch, but we then enter the conference tournaments and they mean nothing. MLB isen't even heard of in this month, and NASCAR has qualifying on the week before Daytona. Isen't that just interesting. The month of February is a complete let-down. This month is almost worthless in the world of sports. I mean, the NBA season may be shaping up, but there is another 40 games to be played.
More 'Tampa' letters
But during my 2 years studying there I have to say that Australian people are among the friendliest I know. The Australian government's attitude toward the boat people on board of Tampa, however, is a different story. I agree that illegal immigrants should not be given the impression that Australia is an easy country to enter. But leaving these people stranded on the boat while waiting for the three governments to negotiate is unacceptable. Norway is too far away, Indonesia lacks the resources to cater to these people (not to mention the (asylum seekers') unwillingness to go there). So why can't Australia take those people temporarily? Return them to their country later if they do not meet the requirement for refugee status. Rianti Setiadarma An Indonesian currently working in Oslo Our country (Australia) may look big enough to accommodate millions of people but only the coastal strips are fertile and the soil is too thin, so Australia's future cannot guarantee the wellbeing of these overwhelming rush of newcomers.
Chavez Warns of War With Colombia
Deploy the air force,'' Chavez said during his weekly TV and radio program. ``We don't want war, but we aren't going to permit the U.S. empire, which is the master (of Colombia) ... to come divide us.'' Chavez called Colombian President Alvaro Uribe ``a criminal'' and branded his government a ``terrorist state,'' likening it to Israel for its U.S.-backed attacks on militants. In protest, Ecuador withdrew its ambassador from Bogota, ordered Colombia's top diplomat expelled and ordered the mobilization of troops to the border with Colombia. Ecuador's president, Rafael Correa, said Colombia deliberately carried out the strike beyond its borders. ``There is no justification,'' Correa said Sunday night, snubbing an earlier announcement from Colombia that it would apologize for the incursion.
Olympics: Five divers seeking to join Bryan in Beijing
KUALA LUMPUR: The number of Malaysian qualifiers for the Olympics is expected to increase drastically when our divers compete in the 16th FINA World Cup in Beijing from Feb 19-25. Of the divers, five Yeoh Ken Nee, Rossharisham Roslan, Leong Mun Yee, Elizabeth Jimie and Pandalela Rinong have been identified as having the potential to do well at the World Cup, which is the last platform to qualify for the Olympics. So far, seven athletes have qualified for the Olympic Games on merit. They are diver Bryan Nickson Lomas; archers Cheng Chu Sian, Wan Mohd Khalmizam Wan Abdul Aziz and Mohd Marbawi Sulaiman; taekwondo exponents Elaine Teo and Che Chew Chan; and pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu. Yesterday, the National Sports Councils (NSC) aquatics manager for elite athletes, Jennifer Yong, said that it was possible for Malaysia to have the biggest number of divers at the Olympics as the top 18 semi-finalists in the individual competition of the World Cup will make the cut. Jennifer said that 14-year-old Pandalela, the countrys top junior diver, was their best bet for an Olympic berth in the 10m platform. She is our best bet to make the grade in the World Cup.
Bunny Town!
The other 475 are mostly feral rabbits, or pets that have gone wild and probably can't be tamed again. Reno 911 The feral bunnies arrived two years ago from a shelter in Reno, Nevada, after the owner got sick and was hospitalized. People continued to drop off unwanted rabbits. But the pets weren't sterilized and eventually, there were 1600 rabbits in the woman's backyard! They had all gone feral and most were sick. "Two bunnies can produce about 100 rabbits a year," said Celeste. "She tried to take care of them but it was just overwhelming." Great Lakes agreed to take about 500 of the feral bunnies in exchange for help building a hospital and buying food, medicine and other supplies. "I believe wholeheartedly we're doing the right thing," said Tim Patino, president of the nonprofit Michigan sanctuary.
Safe corporate social computing?
Look around at social and collaborative computing and what do you see? A complete hotch potch of different systems, some of which run safely behind the firewall, others which sit out there on someone else's servers. You hop from Flickr to Outlook to Skype to Facebook to discussion groups, or whatever. Each has its own approach and, often, integration is only possible through hyperlinks or copy/paste. Add to this the fact that you're working on different devices, laptop, desktop, internet café terminal, mobile phone, Blackberry and so on and what have you got? A lot of time wasting, a lack of security and data distributed all over the show. It can't last. To move forward we need to get to a point where all we're concerned about is doing stuff with our information and other people while the systems themselves move towards invisibility.
