A geek's trip to Capitol Hill on Network Management

Mobile/Wireless Networking News Technology policy Net Neutrality

I appeared before congressional and government staffers on Capitol Hill for a panel on Network Management sponsored by iGrowthGlobal. This was my first time in Washington DC and while it was a little cold for my Californian bones, it was a beautiful city and seeing the capitol of the nation was certainly a worthwhile experience. One thing that struck me was how large and spread-out the Capitol was with so many Government buildings several miles apart.

The panel was moderated by Scott Wallsten, VP for Research and Senior Fellow of iGrowthGlobal.

Mona Shores to replace 600 computers

MONA SHORES — More new technology is on tap for the students of Mona Shores Public Schools.

The district plans to replace 600 desktop computers in labs districtwide this summer, completing improvements funded with a 0.65-mill, $4.2 million bond issue approved by voters in 2005.

The district has spent $3.8 million in technology upgrades and new buses so far, and will spend another $400,000 on the computers this summer.

The millage proceeds have paid for improvements to security (such as surveillance cameras, motion detection and doors), six new buses and new technology such as a phone system, desktop and laptop computers, digital video equipment and digital cameras.

The district has invested heavily in technology through the past decade because officials said they believe it's an essential part of quality instruction for students.

Resistance 2 will feature a 60 player online mode, which I can imagine will be insane. If Resistance 2 expands on the same gameplay and amazing storyline the first Resistance left off on, Resistance 2 will no doubt be one of the best games of the year.

Gears of War 2 - It's already time for a sequel of this game? I'm still replaying the first one!!! Gears of War was easily one of the most spectacular games ever created, and Gears 2 promises to deliver even more punch. Cliffy B (he gets on my nerves, but he made a heck of a game) has said that Gears 2 will have much more storyline than the first one did, and that's about the only thing the first game lacked. If we see an even more ridiculous gun than the Chainsaw Lancer in the first game, I wouldnt be surprized. Only thing I'm concerned about with this game is how hard my jaw will hit the floor when I play it.

HD DVD camp implodes

The emerging story of CES so far is the seeming implosion of HD DVD.

After the defection of Warners to rival Blu-ray camp, the format – backed by Microsoft and Toshiba – is left with just Universal and Paramount as the only major studios to support the hi def disc.

The HD DVD camp turned a crisis into a disaster when it cancelled its scheduled press conference at the show and then – perhaps unsurprisingly – cancelled all media interviews at the show.

It's left observers with the impression that the HD DVD group is in disarray and on the verge of collapse.

Blu-ray, on the other hand, is only to eager to parade spokespeople talking up its own format.

Whatever happens next its clear that consumers are the ones who are suffering.

Housing and profits

In January, after another interview request, Olden wrote that Smith "will be traveling extensively on business over the next several months and will not have time to sit for an interview."

A 1972 graduate of the College of Business at the University of Missouri, Smith is hoping some of his real estate skills rub off on students today. He is in the process of donating $3 million over a 20-year period to finance the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate and to launch a real estate degree program. He is also a member of the colleges Strategic Development Board, which advises the dean about business trends and assists with fundraising.

Smiths portrait hangs in the atrium of the business school building along with eight others who have donated $1 million or more. Up there with the likes of the late Sam Walton and seven other businessmen, Smith is the only one not wearing a suit and tie.

Growing business forges own niche

Lucette Crane Systems has not only managed to fight off low-cost competition from China, the small business based in Oakley is thriving.

Founded in 2002 by Anderson Township resident Jerry Burck, the company opened with two employees in 2002 in a rented factory on Marburg Avenue that had 50-foot ceilings and truck access.

Weld by weld, day by day, those two employees turned slabs of half-inch-thick steel from China into overhead, heavy-duty industrial cranes that weighed between 5 tons and 55 tons.
